Data Gathering
(open data)
In this project we were asked to gather information about the London Riots from the table below. Once we have picked a story and focused on the variables we were asked to look at examples from the Guardian website. When we had our inspiration we must compose a info graphics using pin, thread and the data we gathered to tell the story about the London Riots.
(With the Data provided, we cumulated information about various crimes like looting, arson, vandalism, violence and death amongst chosen locations; Haringey, Brixton, Birmingham, Manchester and Wandsworth.
(After gathering the data we need, we then looked at the Guardians' "Data Blog" to seek examples and ideas on how to narrate our info graphic narrative.)
(After looking at examples from 'data blog', we had to use different coloured thread and pins to communicate the data we have gathered.)
Colours of thread used per category; Vandalism(blue), Death(black), Violence(red), Arson(orange), Looting(purple).
After mapping our information, we starting to see some connection within our data, the thicker the threads the more the certain amount of crimes are carried out. During our reflection we have thought that crimes committed in a certain area are closely linked with social websites statuses created by crime offenders communicating with other crime offenders. Therefore the amount of crime committed at certain area is closely linked to the amount of social media attention at a certain place.
With everything we have learned, we decided to highlight the severity of crimes between Haringey, Brixton, Birmingham, Manchester and Wandsworth. We did this by using different coloured threads to represent different crimes; Violence, Arson, Looting, Vandalism and Death. Making a map of crimes.

Tim Berners-Lee (OpenData Movement)
Tim Berners Lee was quoted, “It is important that efforts to open up data and information are meaningful and lead to real change,” said Sir Tim. “Governments and companies must not shy away from publishing contentious datasets if they contain information that could be used to dramatically improve people's lives.” -via "the Daily Telegraph"

Open Data Movement i believe is built for the development, safety and convenience of peoples lives. It helps makes economy and public awareness better by sharing data that other people can then update for the greater good of the economy. its like a big scale world wide collaboration.
